Find out about Air Cadets regularly have the opportunity to fly with Royal Air Force pilots in Grob Tutor aircraft (shown at right). Flying takes place at one of the 13 Air Experience Flights (AEFs) located around the UK, on an RAF station. Cadets are first given a briefing of what to expect by one of the RAF pilots, with the aid of a short video. When your turn comes to fly, you'll be taken to be kitted out in flying clothing, and then guided out to the aircraft by one of the ground crew or flight staff! The pilot then takes off, and he will show you how the aircraft flies and you'll be given the chance to control the aeroplane, experience aerobatics or simply admire the view and talk to the pilot. All Air Cadets get the opportunity to fly with the AEF at least once each year, each flight lasting about 25 minutes. Air Cadets from 1740 Squadron fly at No.4,The local AEF squadron for Glasgow & West Scotland Wing cadets at Glasgow Airport. Additionally, Air Cadets often get to fly in a variety of other RAF aircraft when attending Annual Camps at RAF stations. In recent years, Air Cadets from Clydebank have flown in aircraft such as the Hercules, Nimrod's, Sentry's, Tri-Star's, as well as Sea King, Puma and Chinook helicopters. Cadets can later apply for a Flying Scholarship and Air Cadet Pilot Navigation Scheme courses to gain 'wings' to wear on their uniform (see below). You could end up being able to fly an aircraft before you have learnt to drive! Flying Scholarships are normally taken at a flying club, and take you within reach of gaining a Private Pilots Licence. Although it is not very common, there is a possibility for Air Cadets to fly in fast jets such as Tornado's and Hawk's, although this is normally in recognition of a great personal achievement.
